"There are no guarantees with this – if it works, it works; if it doesn’t, it doesn’t"

Hi, I am Nicolas, a blacksmith originally from the south of France, and I’ve spent the last 20 years living here in Powys. What started as a visit to Sennybridge when I was 20 turned into a life here – and now, a new challenge.

I initially planted 300 vines by hand at Le Prevost Vineyard in Trallong, working on it during evenings and weekends alongside my metalwork. This is my first attempt at making wine, something I decided to pursue after taking an online vineyard course during the Covid lockdown. Since then, it’s been a case of learning as I go and connecting with other growers to share knowledge.

At around 260 metres above sea level, the vineyard may be one of the highest in the UK. The views alone make it worthwhile after a day’s work, there’s nothing better than being up here, looking out over Pen y Fan, the Black Mountains, and the Usk Valley.

My aim is to produce both red wine and a unique white variety not yet made in Britain. What began as a personal project has grown into something more, and I now hope to one day produce wine to share and sell.

There are no guarantees with this – if it works, it works; if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. But I felt I had to try. I’m French, I love wine, and at some point in life you realise you should go after what you really want.
